Private Pilot ACS SAFO on Slow Flight Issued
The FAA ACS Focus Team has issued a Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) for the slow flight maneuver required on the Private Pilot Practical Test. When the ACS was issued, it contained language that did not allow activation of the stall warning horn to occur for successful completion of the task. While this was not the intent, airman were issued Notice of Disapprovals for activating the stall horn. By definition, according to the Airplane Flying Handbook, slow flight is any speed less than cruise. The former Practical Test Standards required slow flight to be accomplished at Minimum Controllable Airspeed (MCA). MCA is a speed at which any further increase in angle of attack or load factor, or reduction in power will cause an immediate stall (AFH 4-1). For years it was a badge of honor to hold the aircraft at MCA, stall horn blaring and altitude holding. While fun and challenging there is no practical application in real life flight scenarios. Any time the stall horn activates airman should take immediate action to correct for the near stalling condition. Remember train like you fly! The ACS Focus team has issued the SAFO for instructors, applicants, ASI's and examiners for guidance on the maneuver. The SAFO can be found here
